Thurnau Castle | Storchenbau

The major challenge in upgrading the so-called Storchenbau (Stork Building) in Thurnau Castle was to preserve the historical authenticity of the façade in this area while at the same time meeting modern standards for energy efficiency and sustainability. maxit ecosphere played its part in making the castle shine in its former glory.

Preserving the charm of the past

In the midst of Upper Franconia, "Thurnau Castle" sits enthroned in Thurnau as a witness to bygone eras. The historic complex, whose origins date back to the 13th century, is an architectural jewel and delights its visitors with a variety of stylistic elements. Renaissance and Baroque elements adorn a Gothic core and give the castle a unique atmosphere.

The major challenge in upgrading the so-called Storchenbau was to preserve the historical authenticity of the façade in this area while at the same time meeting modern standards for energy efficiency and sustainability.

maxit ecosphere - for interior and exterior use

The raised façade of the Storchenbau, built in 1660 - the connection between the upper and lower castle courtyards - was energetically upgraded with maxit eco 72.

Due to the required plaster thicknesses of 10 - 15 cm, the top storey of the Storchenbau was first fitted with plaster supports (Welnet); this is always required for plaster thicknesses of 10 cm and above. The surfaces were plastered with maxit eco 72 Sprayable Exterior Insulation and then fitted with a reinforcement layer of maxit eco 73. The last step was a finishing plaster consisting of maxit artista and a coat of maxit silicate paint A 7020.

The interior plastering work extended over a total of four floors. In the course of this, the walls, some of which were very crooked, were removed from porous old plaster, the masonry was cleaned and a bonding bridge consisting of maxit san Vorspritz was applied. This was followed by a levelling layer of maxit san Grund for possible salt transport from the existing masonry. maxit ecosphere was used as interior insulation again - this time in the form of maxit eco 71 Sprayable Interior Insulation in a plaster thickness of 6 cm.

Since it was essential to preserve the character of the 400-year-old building, the aim of the plastering in the exterior and interior was not a flat surface but one that ran along the masonry. In past times, plastered surfaces were never straight and corners or window reveals were usually round.
