"Neues Schloss" | Waldthurn

Architects and clients demanded thermal insulation for the façade of the listed "Neues Schloss" Waldthurn in order to reduce the property's operating costs and to prevent the formation of mould in the non-insulating mixed masonry. It was the sprayable insulation system maxit ecosphere that prevailed.

Fissured mixed masonry

The listed "Neues Schloss" Waldthurn (Upper Palatinate), a former princely castle from the 17th century, could finally be renovated thanks to its inclusion in an EU funding programme. However, the poor condition of the building made it necessary - even before the façade renovation - to work on the roof and the massively damaged masonry: tonnes of crack injection mortar were used.

Architects and clients demanded thermal insulation for the façade in order to reduce the operating costs of the property and to avoid mould growth in the non-insulating mixed masonry. Since the façade appearance had to be preserved for reasons of monument protection, the only option was an insulating plaster system.

Thermal insulation plus heat storage: maxit ecosphere

After various technical and economic calculations as well as the creation of sample surfaces, the sprayable insulation system maxit ecosphere was able to prevail over the competitors. Even with a minimum thickness of 3 - 4 cm, maxit eco 72 manages to halve the heat loss through the exterior wall.

Due to old render residues, maxit eco 70 was applied as a bonding agent. The highly fissured masonry required a plaster that is low in shrinkage and can bridge strongly varying plaster thicknesses without cracking. maxit eco 72 can be sprayed onto the wall from the silo within one day in the required layer thicknesses of 3 - 6 cm, so that the entire surface was covered with the spray insulation in less than two weeks.

Plaster profiles were not used because the historical appearance had to be preserved. Instead, only wooden slats were attached to corners and window and door reveals, and the reveals were plastered later. The advantage of this is that the plastered surfaces have a slight unevenness in the end and thus the historical charm of the object is preserved.

After priming, maxit ecosphere was given the obligatory fabric filler, on which the maxit ip artista fine plaster was then applied in the old German rubbed plaster style. The cloth-matt drying maxit solar paint was used as a finish.

Energetically valuable

The renovation concept was successful all around. The renovated castle is a jewel in which both official and church celebrations can now take place in a dignified ambience - and with moderate heating costs.
